Leveling your Syncro or Vanagon is an important step on the path toward maximizing suspension performance. It improves the feel of the van and adds to available suspension travel. You will be surpirsed by how much of a difference it can make.
The first step is to measure all four wheels on level ground, measuring from the center of the axle to the lower lip of the fender.
Once you have the figures, determine which wheels need to be raised to level the van, and by how much.
Due to the effects of the suspension geometry, a shim 3/8" thick will raise the rear about 3/8", but it will raise the front just over 1/2". The rear has a ration of 1:1 while the front geometry has a ratio closer to 1:1.5. Be sure to take this ratio into account when determining how much shim thickness you need.
Most stock vans only require roughly 3/16" - 1/2" in the rear, and 3/16" - 3/8" in the front for leveling.
